Recent news has emerged regarding a military exercise conducted by an Russian warship, taking place approximately 46 miles (74 kilometers) off the coast of the United Kingdom, near the southern area of Plymouth. This information was reported by Sky News based on a communication from the UK’s Ministry of Defence.
The Russian vessel, identified as Neusztrasimij, was escorting tankers belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet through the English Channel. The live-fire exercise was carried out on Monday in international waters and lasted for about 30 minutes. The Royal Navy monitored the proceedings closely, emphasizing its readiness to protect the national security of the United Kingdom.
Notably, the Russian ship had previously informed a Royal Navy vessel about its plans for the live-fire drill, requesting that they maintain a safe distance – a request that was adhered to by the British ship.
The operations linked to Russia’s shadow fleet aim to circumvent Western sanctions imposed on Russian oil exports due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Earlier in mid-June, British armed forces intercepted a tanker associated with this shadow fleet in the English Channel.
Keir Starmer, the former Prime Minister, responded to the operations stating, „this operation deals another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine that they cannot hide.” Just days later, a warning shot was fired at a British yacht by a Russian warship, as the yacht had come „very close” to the Admiral Grigorovich.
The complexities surrounding the Russian shadow fleet, along with the sanctions and attacks affecting maritime vessels, have become pressing topics of discussion.
